Distinction
Thanks for daddy's secret.
He told me to lessen the words on introduction and conclusion part, focus on content, grammar is not that important as it just contain few percent.
Yes, my grammar not really good.
I try to focus much on content and write very less words for my introduction and conclusion part,

matters assignment 2
Question: Concentrating
on the set scene from Chungking Express (Wong Kar-Wai,
1996), provide a critical
analysis of its mise-en-scène; as this is defined by Bordwell
and Thompson’s “The Shot:
Mise-en-Scène”. Be sure to
consider all of the aspects of
the film’s mise-en-scène:
settings and sets, props, costume and make-up, lighting,
staging, performance or acting
styles. Your critical analysis should argue for how the
different elements of
mise-en-scène work together (or not) in the scene as well as how
they relate to the narrative and/or stylistic themes of the
film as a whole.
Introduction
Technically, “putting into the scene” is the meaning of
mise-en-scene; it was mainly about directing plays. From the theatrical source;
setting, lighting, costume and the acting styles of the characters are the film
aspects that tie with the art of the cinema. In the scene set of Chungking express (Wong Kar-wai, 1996),
we can realize that the mise-en-scene of the film performs well to deliver the
realism of film and themes of the narrative as a whole. Using a certain given
sequence to analyse the mise-en-scene and look at elements that work. Each
element of Mise-en-scene is distinctly selected to help deliver the stylistic
themes of the film as a whole. It works perfectly to help the audience more
understand the films narrative.
Body
The initial shot of the sequence built a numbers things for
the audience. Firstly, we can observed it in a hectic city as setting, the
silhouettes of passers walking past skews and interrupt our view of the two
characters our eyes concentrating on. We see these two characters at a shop,
both of them have some distance between; this scene revealed the current
relationship between these two characters. The character Faye is the worker
while the character Cop 663 is the customer. Faye seems to be admired with cop
663 as she is slumped onto the counter in his direction with whole attention to
him nevertheless the cop 663 merely notices her and watches the crowd of people
passing by. Thus, we can see that this is a city setting; a hectic street of
Hong Kong.
In the
article of Bordwell and Thompson, Andre Bazin (1940)
mentioned
“The
human being is all- important in the theatre. The drama on the screen can exist
without actors. A banging door, a leaf in the wind, waves beating on the shore
can heighten the dramatic effect. Some film masterpieces use man only as an
accessory, like an extra or in counterpoint to nature, which is the true
leading character.” Andre Bazin (1940)
In terms of
setting, colour plays an important role. For an instance, in the Chungking Express, director Wong kar-Wai
used parallels among its multiple settings whether at home or market by the
repetitive used of monotonous green backgrounds to perform the scenery. In
fact, a full-size setting is not necessary be utilized, thus director Wong
kar-wai used tiny market backgrounds to create fantasy scenes as fantastic film
style. In always, unique digital effects are utilized to create the setting
portions, such as the aquarium light of the living room in the set scene of Chunking express. The blue glowing light
from the aquarium showed the gloom in which he sits and thinks of his life
without his lover. Natural lighting works perfectly for the constant of the
realism of the film and of the characters.
In the
aspects of costume and make-up, both of these have own functions in the whole
film and it has diversified functions. Bordwell and Thompson write
“By integrating itself with setting,
costume may function to reinforce the film’s narrative and thematic patters”
(2001, p163).
The
character of police officer is played by Tony Leung, director Wong ordered him
dressed in a police uniform as it is very noticeable and real and the character
is delivered to the audience, certain expectations of the character arise. Through
costume, Director Wong is able to uses a realistic narrative and film style;
the character cop 663 is displayed one way emotional when he is in police
uniform yet is totally a different person when he is displayed in his briefs
and singlet at his home. Furthermore, Director Wong uses costume to show the realism
to the story and each character; allow different costume to symbolize the main
themes and the film ideas. In Chungking
express film, in casual role narratives, director Wong was performed
authenticity of costume in the setting; he was said to worn underwear that
would implant the appropriate mood in his actor despite it was never happen
outside the film, the character of cop 663 is wearing white singlet at home to
match the setting while the character of Faye, she is wearing yellow sunglasses
for the sake of fashion trends of that era, he allowing Faye to follow the
mainstream culture so Faye’s character becomes noticeable and real.
In terms of
naturalistic style of the film, Director Wong adopted natural lighting in the
whole film. The use of natural light maintains the audience in a real world
where characters become twisted by shadows and the sunlight does not often
wholly catch the main their face. For an instance which perfectly demonstrates
the use of natural lighting is in the scene that cop 663 carries Faye’s food
parcel through the market. In this sequence we observe these two characters go
through the market and the streets of Hong Kong. In the transformation between
of shaded market area to the outer area of the open street, we observe unceasing
change of lighting.
Conclusion
The
Mise-en-scene of Chungking express is
well fitted for the films main themes and narratives styles. It delivers a
realistic setting and genre of story which help the characters of Director Wong
and themes are more understandable by an audience as well as so arguable is a
success. To deliver the idealism of the film and to help the audience figure
the theme, it is necessary for Director Wong to keep the realism of the film.
By realism throughout the film, the audience can better relate to each
character and will be easier to recognize the themes behind the narrative.

COMMENTS: Clarissa,
On moments, your assignment clearly
indicates that you have a solid understanding of the required concept.
But, you really need to pay a further
attention to grammar (sentence structure in particular).
Still, in comparison with the previous
assignment, this is a significant improvement – well done!

LOL~ "Some more double marked"?
Means two lecturers gave me distinction!
Hmmmm....
it's to believe my own ability now.
But still,
thanks for daddy's 'essay' secret!
Daddy is so smart,
he does things according to the 'value',
he said in language,
the most important is content, grammar and introduction all those are minor influece because not many marks.
He said the most just 10 or 20% only!
LOL!
When I follow his instruction and so called 'secret',
I really attained distinction!
Yet,
I begin to believe linguistic is my specialty now :)
