The torturous lecturer and the 50% assignment
Ultimately,
I done my assignment which due on tomorrow 5pm.
Uneasy,
it's really uneasy.
50% of grade mark is involved in this assignment.
The lecturer is really torturing us,
50% so what??!!! Can tortured human by this way??!!
In this two weeks spring hols,
she asked us to do one website, fact sheet and magazine page by own designed and published.
Means we have to printed by our own with glossy surface without teaching in class !
The printing setup is too complicated;
This time I learned from youtube instead of Google.
I straight typed in Youtube
'How to print out a magazine page from Indesign software'
LOL!
It does really help,
but the only problem is somehow it came out the inverted page on the next page.
Coincidence,
I saw my course mate in the computer lab,
I seek help from her bout how to print as I already tried several times,
she'd doesn't know how to print also, she prints even worst than me :(
She printed the even worst one for me (No glossy surface, wrong size, some more terbalik) waste my time and printing cost!
My frustration lead me straight typed in Google search engine
'Why a double sided paper appeared inverted on the next page.'
LOL!
It came out
So many problems and solutions !
*After figured out which is my problems of course solution is found at the end.
Huh!
Finally its done with both aids from Google and Youtube.
Besides than three genres folios - magazine page, webpage and fact sheet.
This torturous lecturer still want us to submit 1000 words theoretical reflection, references list and assignment cover sheet.
Doing research for the content of every each genre.
And both,
we have to submit electronically and also printed everything and handout in class,
silly right?
She is thinking 50% so can ask people to do as more as possible to tortured manners!
Totally human cruelty, not friendly, no manners, dont know public relation and dont have interpersonal relation!
But during this two weeks holiday,
after I came back from 4 days 3 nights Sydney,
everyday I did a little by a little,
2 hours drama and 2 hours assignment,
alternatively do this everyday.
And finally its thoroughly done tonight.
I hope a distinction could attain by me as I really put in my afford in this silly assignment.
I know I've a very dead nerve cell in designing,
but I even sit in front of the computer; investing many hours in researching the content and designing the layout of this assignment.
Regarding the magazine page, webpage and fact sheet,
I spent two days for each,
regarding the theoretical reflection,
it basically about linguistic instead of creativity,
thus I spent the least time while doing theoretical reflection.
4 hours only already done! Haha~!

publication and design assignment 2: 1000 words theoretical reflection
Essay topic: Discuss the design issues you faced in changing the material from one
form to another. Theorise these issues, and the decisions you made, with the
help of your course readings. Use at least 4 course references.
Introduction
From
changing a material from one genre to another, lines are one of the fundamental
issue of design; either solo or mix with other lines may enhance in
readability, shape and communication of a design. When forming a magazine page,
without a line, it is very hard to organize, texturize, guide the eye and even
deliver common meanings to the reader. Typography is a building block to all
sorts of design projects. Stanley
Morison (n.d) gave the definition
“Typography is the efficient means to
an essentially utilitarian, and only accidentally aesthetic, end, for the enjoyment
of patterns is rarely the reader's chief aim." Stanley Morison (n.d)
In graphic
design, to gain an eye of the viewer in heading or title is very important.
There are huge varieties within typeface, such as light, bold and Italic, the most
common one is times new roman and Helvetica. Thus, choosing the right type is
not easy. For an instance, I used Verdana type font in most of the genre
heading as it is extremely useful since it just demand to be used for a few
within a project; definitely it still have more options to be utilize, but
Verdana type font helps in attained consistency in design.
Theorise issues

In the
principle of design, there is nothing wrong with the left headlines and
graphics. It produced an informal tone to a layout of magazine page design. In
my decision of magazine page design, this called for the layouts series of
informal design. Many alignments and texts with cap are used which make the
viewer more readable. For the webpage design, left-aligned is used as the text
alignment, the texts are wrapped around with the graphics like images and icons
which the text is aligned more to the right, some added icons are used to
balance the overall design. Regarding the fact sheet, balance issue is faced in
the genre change, the original fact sheet appear to be random elements without
unity or balance, to increase the attractiveness of the fact sheet, the text
block and graphic are resized, arranged and separated into two vertical parts. The
headings are changed into horizontal instead of slanting to create a sense of
unity and balance to each other.
In term of
space, white space is not necessary to be white. In the webpage genre, when
facing the issue of lack of white space, the big black blocks are created and a
lot of white space is added. Adding the number of people to create more white space;
offers contrast and increase the new genre theme. Additionally, extra leading,
thicker margins, more paragraph indents are all used to add white space and more
eye-catching to the design. In the magazine page, the design issue is faced
when there is too much of white space and it seemed overly simple before doing
some contrast elements. To increase the contrast of the page, oversized drop
cap is used as a contrast element to aid in balance the page with big and bold
type font elements at the first or first two alphabets of the paragraph; the
drop cap style and the images are consistent throughout the page with the rest
of the content. In this area, style sheets helped in overcoming the issue of
writing a sentence format, punctuation, size fonts and so on to enhance
proximity, unity and determine the amount of white space.
When dealing with the issues of format, choosing the right format is vital for the distribution of sales materials particular in flyers, fact sheets, magazine page and even webpage that can be view electronically. The format decision is rely on factors such as the targeted audience, purpose and contexts. For an instance, it depends on the issue of will materials be designed for a huge range of potential audience or aimed at individuals who are intentionally to purchase, whether to invoke the audience’s emotions, is the item consider a genre’s utilitarian or will be regarded as an improvement to potential buyers. When facing the design issue, the similar typefaces, type sizes and even type styles should be considered for headings and content copy. The A5 size fact sheet is set more than one columns, more consistency is used such as the same typefaces, type sizes and type styles for headings and content. Besides, the same main photographs and extra images are used in the fact sheet with a consistent margins and borders as design.
The ultimate
issue that faced in doing this genre folio is Adobe Acrobat files PDF, it is
very important in representing the way to share information. The main problem
is embedded fonts, PDF embeds both true type and type 1 fonts in its files thus
regardless which typefaces are or are not, installed it in reader’s computer,
my intended fonts will appear on screen as well as when printed. Furthermore,
another issue is files compression when exporting PDF from the Indesign
software, since PDF were designed for electronic outgiving, the internal
compression reduces their size for immediate transmission, therefore the lowest
compression size is selected instead of the highest one.
Conclusion
Folios are
important because they are basically seemed attractive to the buyers and
deliver them a decision that that can buy elsewhere. After the potential buyers
get those messages from the brochures genre, there is a high possibility that
they will be the market audience or partner. The most importantly, audience are always take
their first glance at attractive typeface, good line spacing, readable headings
and subheadings, frame margins such as more white space if frame text and
unity. Conclusively, webpage distribution of marketing material plays a vital
role in marketing factor. The glossy genre surface is expensive when printed.
This put in great obstacles on businesses that not necessary need that many
copies.
